Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Sandmann and Kevin Wright managing partner of Z Movers LLC
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We worked together at one of LAs larger moving companies for a few years. Most often we worked as a team of two or on larger crews where we were the leads. Week after week the company was getting specific requests for us from customers who were referring their friends and family. After a while we decided to strike out on our own; our goal was to start a company where each job would be done with the highest level of customer service in every phase.
For the first year and a half, we did 80% of the jobs ourselves and built a reputation as one the most talked about new moving companies in Los Angeles. It’s no exaggeration to say that almost all of our customers raved about this new kind of moving experience. We quickly had more work than we could handle as our reputation spread solely by word of mouth.
We have taken great pains to grow slowly in order to maintain that level of service. To that end, each new employee that we bring on board must live up to those standards. It’s extremely important to us that every job is performed with the utmost integrity and that there is clear communication during every phase of the move.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, we were the original employees as well the owners so every job was in fact done to our high and exacting standards. Our first couple of hires conformed quickly to our way of doing things because our influence was constant; we were most often in the field with them for their first month or so of work. By the time they went out without us they were willing and able to maintain the standards that we had set. As we continue to grow and hire more people our influence in the field is sometimes diluted. We are not willing to compromise the standards on which the company was built therefore we find ourselves experiencing more employee turnover than we imagined when we first set out.
It’s not always easy, but we are finding our core group of good employees who really get what we are about. We like to profess that while moving is not rocket science it takes a willingness and the desire to provide great service day in and day out.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Z Movers – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in residential and commercial moves throughout the greater Los Angeles area. We understand that along with marriage, divorce, changing jobs and having kids that moving is one of the more disruptive experiences that our customers face. Most people dread their moving day. We are proud that more often than not at the end of a Z Movers job our customers are smiling, laughing and feeling like they just spent the day with people who truly care. Many of our customers joke that they wouldn’t mind moving again just because the overall experience was enjoyable. This may sound like hyperbole, but because we’ve made it our business to empathize with our customers, moving day with Z Movers is something they have never experienced before. Furthermore, we recognize that our customers are only going to have a positive experience if they feel like they are getting good value. We like to say that we have learned to whistle while we work and work we do!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We would like to continue to grow at a pace that allows us to maintain the high level of service that we insist on providing. Based on our reputation we could easily have several more trucks than we currently possess, but growing organically is the route we prefer. Our next big step will be opening a Z Movers branch in Orange County.
